On the third anniversary of the Ukraine crisis's full escalation, China has stepped forward, urging the United Nations Security Council to spearhead peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict. Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the critical moment for a negotiated settlement during a recent Security Council meeting.
"At present, when the Ukraine issue is at a critical juncture for a negotiated settlement, we expect the international community to create a favorable atmosphere for promoting a political solution to the crisis," Fu Cong stated. He highlighted the importance of the UN and the Security Council in forging consensus among member states to advance peace initiatives.
China expressed support for the ongoing U.S.-Russia agreement to initiate peace talks, underscoring the belief that dialogue surpasses confrontation in seeking resolutions. "Dialogue is still better than confrontation, and talks are better than fights," Fu added, reaffirming China's commitment to all efforts dedicated to achieving peace.
Furthermore, Fu called on European nations to contribute to peace by addressing the crisis's root causes and establishing a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework, ensuring long-term stability across the continent.
In a related development, the UN Security Council recently adopted a U.S.-drafted resolution advocating for a swift end to the conflict and a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The resolution saw 10 votes in favor, none against, and five abstentions from France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia.
