Russian FM Lavrov to Attend G20 Talks in South Africa

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Africa this month, according to a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry. The talks, scheduled for February 20–21 in Cape Town, will focus on multilateral cooperation amid global tensions over economic stability and security challenges.

Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed Lavrov’s attendance via state news agency RIA, emphasizing Russia’s commitment to addressing "urgent international issues." The meeting comes as G20 members—representing over 80% of global GDP—grapple with supply chain disruptions, tech sanctions, and geopolitical friction linked to the Ukraine conflict.

With South Africa hosting as 2023 G20 chair, analysts predict discussions will also spotlight food security and energy transitions. Recent data shows Russia’s trade with G20 members grew 14% in 2022 despite Western sanctions, driven by partnerships in Asia and the Middle East.

Young global citizens and business leaders are watching for signals on digital economy reforms, while sustainability advocates urge progress on climate financing. Lavrov’s participation marks a rare in-person appearance at a major multilateral forum since 2022.
