China remains steadfast in its commitment to resolving the ongoing dispute with the European Union over electric vehicle (EV) tariffs through open dialogue, according to a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
During a regular press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that China has proposed flexible solutions to address the conflict. However, he criticized the EU for continuously rejecting China's proposals without presenting any specific countermeasures, despite their claims of willingness to engage in constructive discussions.
Lin labeled the European Commission's anti-subsidy investigation against Chinese EVs as a typical protectionist act and political maneuvering. He argued that the EU probe disregards objective facts, violates World Trade Organization rules, and opposes historical trends, thereby undermining the EU’s efforts in green transition and global climate change initiatives.
Since July 5, 2024, the EU has imposed provisional additional tariffs ranging from 17.4% to 37.6% on imports of Chinese EVs. This measure remains in effect for a four-month period during which the EU will make a final decision on definitive duties.
The Chinese spokesperson expressed hope that the EU would demonstrate sincerity by considering the reasonable concerns and suggestions put forth by the Chinese EV industry. He warned that if the European Commission persists with its unilateral approach, China will take necessary actions to firmly defend the legitimate rights and interests of its businesses and industries.
