China and Norway Strengthen Ties Amid Growing Trade and Green Initiatives

In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Norwegian counterpart Espen Barth Eide in Laos on Friday. This meeting marks a pivotal moment as 2024 celebrates the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Norway.

Wang highlighted the remarkable increase in bilateral trade since the beginning of the year, showcasing strong resilience and vast potential for future growth. Emphasizing mutual trust and beneficial cooperation, he expressed China's commitment to forging the next 70 years of robust relations with Norway.

Inviting Norwegian businesses to delve deeper into the Chinese market, Wang underscored Beijing's openness to partnership in green transformation. He stressed the importance of jointly safeguarding economic globalization and the multilateral trading system, areas where both nations can collaborate effectively.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide echoed the sentiment, affirming Norway's dedication to its relationship with China. He reiterated Norway's adherence to the one-China policy and its stance against secession, aligning with China's principled positions on global issues.

Eide also addressed climate change, emphasizing Norway's refusal to impose tariffs on electric vehicles and its readiness to build a green partnership with China. This collaboration aims to address pressing environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.

The discussions also touched upon China's stance on the Ukraine crisis and the Palestinian issue. Eide appreciated China's efforts in fostering peace and reconciliation among Palestinian factions, reflecting Norway's support for Palestinian statehood and regional stability.

As both nations look forward to high-level exchanges in the coming stages, the meeting in Laos sets the stage for a strengthened Sino-Norwegian partnership grounded in trust, economic cooperation, and shared environmental goals.
