Thirty-five people lost their lives, and another 43 sustained injuries after a car deliberately rammed into pedestrians at a sports center in Zhuhai, a city in the Chinese mainland's Guangdong Province, early Monday evening.
The tragic incident occurred around 7:48 p.m. when individuals were exercising at the sports center. The suspect, identified as a 62-year-old divorced man named Fan, attempted to flee the scene but was swiftly apprehended by police.
During the arrest, authorities discovered Fan in his vehicle, trying to take his own life with a knife. Emergency responders intervened rapidly, transporting him to a hospital where he remains unconscious due to severe injuries and is not yet able to be questioned.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Fan's actions were driven by dissatisfaction with the outcome of the property division in his divorce. Law enforcement officials have filed a case against him on suspicion of endangering public safety through dangerous means and have placed him under criminal detention.
Further investigations are ongoing, and medical treatment continues for those injured in this devastating event.
