Hengshui Lake Reserve Hosts Over 60,000 Wintering Birds

In a remarkable display of nature's resilience, more than 60,000 birds have been spotted wintering at the Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve in Hebei Province, north China. This impressive count comes from the recent 2023-2024 water bird monitoring operations conducted by local authorities.

The dedicated reserve staff identified 70 different species during their observations, including several under first-class national protection. Notably, the great bustards were seen in the reserve for the first time since 2021, marking a significant milestone for conservation efforts.

Zhang Yuguang, a representative of the reserve, highlighted the importance of these findings, emphasizing the diverse avian population supported by the reserve. An Chunlin from the Hebei provincial forestry and grassland bureau added that despite a colder winter than usual, the Hengshui Lake provides an optimal habitat with abundant food sources, ensuring the well-being of the wintering birds.

These survey results are a testament to the Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve's commitment to ecological protection and environmental improvement. The reserve, located in Hengshui City, boasts the largest single water surface on the North China Plain and features a comprehensive wetland ecosystem comprising swamps, waters, mudflats, meadows, and woodlands.

Hengshui Lake is a crucial stopover and wintering site for migratory birds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. To date, reserve staff have observed and recorded 334 bird species, underscoring the reserve's vital role in supporting global biodiversity.
