BYD, one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturers, has announced a significant recall affecting nearly 97,000 of its electric vehicles. The recall addresses a manufacturing defect in the steering control unit, which poses potential fire risks, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) reported.
The affected models include the Dolphin and Yuan Plus, produced between November 2022 and December 2023. These models accounted for 26 percent of BYD's impressive total sales of approximately 3 million units in 2023, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
While BYD has rapidly ascended to become the top seller of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles globally, recalls for its models have been rare. The previous recall in 2022 involved a small batch of Tang plug-in hybrids due to battery pack defects.
SAMR stated that BYD will instruct its authorized dealers to implement a \"physical fix\" on the recalled vehicles. As of now, BYD has not provided a public comment regarding the recall. It remains unclear if any of the recalled cars were destined for export markets.
