China Shifts to Cleaner Energy with Declining Coal Dependence

China's energy consumption structure is undergoing a significant transformation, with coal consumption steadily decreasing as the country embraces more sustainable energy sources.

According to data presented at the 2024 China Mining Conference and Exhibition in Tianjin, coal accounted for 55.3 percent of China's total primary energy consumption in 2023, marking a decline of 12.1 percentage points over the past decade.

The Ministry of Natural Resources reported that the share of non-fossil energy sources—including hydropower, nuclear power, wind power, and solar power—has risen by 7.7 percentage points during this period. This shift highlights China's commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing its reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Since 2012, the driving force behind China's energy production has shifted from conventional power sources to new, cleaner energies, aligning with the nation's \"dual carbon\" goals. China aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, underscoring its dedication to combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.
