Indonesia Inaugurates Southeast Asia’s First EV Battery Manufacturing Plant

Indonesia has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by inaugurating Southeast Asia's first EV battery manufacturing plant in Karawang, West Java Province. This groundbreaking facility, owned by HLI Green Power, is a collaborative effort between Indonesia Battery Corporation, South Korean automaker Hyundai, and battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution.

During the ceremony, Indonesian President Joko Widodo emphasized the plant's importance, stating, \"This is Southeast Asia's first and largest EV battery cell plant. I am confident we can win against other countries with this.\" The plant leverages Indonesia's abundant reserves of nickel, bauxite, and copper, positioning the country to dominate the global EV market.

The initial investment of $1 billion is set to produce 10 GWh of battery cells, sufficient to power 150,000 electric vehicles. There are ambitious plans to expand production to 20 GWh in the near future, further solidifying Indonesia's role in the EV supply chain.

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan highlighted Indonesia's readiness to become a key player in the global EV supply chain. He emphasized the integrated ecosystem involving international stakeholders, aiming to reduce carbon emissions, enhance air quality, and improve the quality of life for people worldwide.

With its strategic investments and rich natural resources, Indonesia is poised to become a central hub in the global transition to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
