Henan province, renowned for its substantial grain production, is rapidly transforming into a hub of technological innovation, setting a new benchmark for regional development in the Chinese mainland.
Governor Wang Kai highlighted at a recent press conference that Henan is leveraging its rich agricultural heritage to fuel a robust tech ecosystem. With 13 state key laboratories, 172 national innovation platforms, and over 12,000 technology firms, the province is positioned as a leader in high-tech advancements.
In 2023, Henan saw a remarkable 22.6% year-on-year increase in investments within its high-tech manufacturing sector, outpacing the national average by 12 percentage points. This surge is driven by strategic emerging industries such as advanced equipment, electronic information, and biomedicine.
Henan’s commitment to innovation is evident in its production of optical communication chips, sensors, and superhard materials, which have captured significant market share across the country. These advancements not only enhance the province's industrial growth but also contribute to China's broader technological ambitions.
Balancing technological progress with agricultural sustainability, Henan remains steadfast in ensuring food security. Governor Wang emphasized that grain production remains a critical priority, with initiatives focused on improving farmland quality, cultivating superior seeds, expanding the use of agricultural machinery, and refining planting techniques. These efforts are projected to boost grain yields to 70 million tonnes by 2025, up from 68 million tonnes in 2022.
Currently, Henan contributes a quarter of China's wheat supply and leads the nation in oil and edible fungi production. Additionally, the province ranks second nationwide in the output of vegetables and poultry eggs, underscoring its pivotal role in sustaining food security while driving industrial innovation.
