At the 79th UN General Assembly's First Committee on nuclear disarmament, Chinese Disarmament Ambassador Shen Jian addressed the pressing issues facing the international nuclear disarmament process.
Shen emphasized that the current lack of strategic trust among major powers, coupled with escalating geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts, presents unprecedented challenges to global efforts aimed at reducing nuclear risks. He called on nations to work collaboratively to promote disarmament and prevent nuclear proliferation to safeguard worldwide peace and security.
The ambassador underscored the urgent need to de-escalate regional tensions and swiftly achieve ceasefires. He advocated for a significant reduction in the role of nuclear weapons within national security policies, the cessation of forward deployment of strategic forces, and the adoption of pragmatic and feasible approaches to nuclear disarmament.
Shen also highlighted the importance of addressing nuclear transparency issues with objectivity and rationality, and reinforcing international non-proliferation initiatives. He warned that clinging to Cold War-era mindsets, exacerbating major power rivalries, and provoking bloc confrontations would only hinder the progress of international nuclear arms control.
China promotes a vision of \"common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security\" and urges the international community to commit to genuine multilateralism, respect each other's legitimate security concerns, and collaboratively advance the international nuclear arms control agenda.
