Marking a decade since the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Fujian Province unveils a breathtaking tribute to this historic waterway. In April 2023, a dedicated team led by Zheng Chunhui, a representative inheritor of Putian wood carving—a national intangible cultural heritage—embarked on a five-year journey to create a monumental wood carving of the canal.
The impressive artwork features nine camphor trees, each over 500 years old, meticulously crafted to depict the vibrant canal transportation and the rich cultural landscapes of the cities along its banks. This wooden masterpiece not only honors the engineering marvel of the Grand Canal but also celebrates the enduring cultural exchanges it fostered over centuries.
The project highlights the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic vision, aiming to inspire both locals and visitors with the Grand Canal's legacy. As the carving takes shape, it stands as a symbol of China's commitment to preserving and showcasing its historical treasures, ensuring that the stories of the past continue to resonate in the present and future.
