Battling the Drought: Yunnan’s Efforts to Secure Water Supply

Yunnan Province in southwest China is continuing its battle against persistent drought conditions that have plagued the region since last winter. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, reduced rainfall and diminished water inflow have significantly impacted the area.

The ongoing drought has affected approximately 703,000 people across 13 cities and prefectures in Yunnan. Despite the widespread dryness, the ministry assures that there is a sufficient water supply available for both urban and rural populations.

In response to the severe water shortage, the Ministry of Water Resources has deployed working groups twice around the Spring Festival. These teams have been tasked with assessing the drought situation and guiding efforts to ensure a stable water supply for cities, rural areas, and agricultural needs during the spring season.

To bolster these relief efforts, the ministry has coordinated the allocation of national debt funds to support the construction of 20 medium-sized and 47 small reservoirs in Yunnan. Additionally, plans are underway to transform 27 irrigation districts, aiming to restore over 66,667 hectares of irrigated land, which will significantly enhance the region's agricultural resilience.
